COLD WEATHER PERIODS & RAINY PERIODS
At certain times of the year weather conditions can effect what is possible on a tour itinerary and certain modifacations must be made.
During periods of lots of rain leaving the salar covered in water it is not possible to drive across in the same way and some areas are not accesible so must be omitted during a tour. Often this can mean that Inca Wasi (Fish Island) cannot be accessed. Also , the first nights sleeping location might be changed as water on the salar can mean crossing it takes too long. This might mean you do not sleep in a hotel made from salt. Additionally the Sol de Mañana geysers and hot springs might be visited at end of day 2 and not start of day 3. You will however get to stop to see incredible mirror effects were the sky is reflected in the water.
During cold weather periods that result in snowfall in the high altitude areas some parts can become impassable, in particular in the area of Eduardo Avaroa National Park that contains the Red Lagoon, Green Lagoon and Dali desert area. If these areas become impassable or unsafe then the itinarary will be changed. This can happen at short notice and also can mean that 3 day tours are cut short to be 2 day tours. The border crossing point for transfer to San Pedro de Atacama can also close during these times but there may be an alternative border transfer option (conditons permitting) further north near Ollague that can be offered but it will incur an additional cost due to increased distances travelled by the chilean transport.
